Education System in India

The Right to Education Act 2009 came as a revolution in the Indian Education System. It might have changed the dimension of education in India, but it is also a reality that India is far behind the developed countries like Canada, Japan, Finland, S.Korea in terms of the education sector.

The total number of Indians overseas increased from 66,713 in 2000 to 3,01,406 in 2016 based on analysis by the UNESCO Institutes of statistics, this is all because of the lack of research opportunities in India. Most of the brilliant minds who ace the exam like the Engineering entrance, Management entrance later go to the best foreign universities like MIT, Harvard, Stanford, etc.

In QS world university ranking, only 3 Indian institutes have made it to the top 200 i.e, IIT Bombay, IISc Bangalore, and IIT Delhi. However, not a single Indian institute got a position in the top 100. These data show that we are lacking in this field to a great extent.

Here, as being a student I will give my opinion about "THE EDUCATION SYSTEM IN INDIA".

Rectification V/S 'Ratta'fication

Rectification generally means to correct something and, to correct something we need to study and research on a particular topic, and 'ratta'fication means to rote a particular topic or subject. Both of the above things are important in different aspects, but the importance of rectification in education cannot be replaced. The situation of R&D is very poor in India this is because of the lack of infrastructure in Indian Institutes.

The practical labs usually start from 9th standard in school but most of the student fears to perform practical in labs and when teachers cannot make them understand they tell the student to rote the practicals too.

Evaluation System

Indian Education system revolves around marking. We have made an environment where excellence in one subject is calculated by the average of all the subjects one has been given in his curriculum.

A student who does good in board exams could not clear the Entrance Examination or vice versa, this could be the trap of the evaluation process on which our education system depends.

In a competitive examination, there is a rat race that is going on to get marks. Students are becoming a so-called "MCQ Solving Machine

Equal respect to all subjects

We live in a society where everyone has a presumption that the brilliant should choose science, commerce for mediocre, and the dull one chooses the arts. Even schools distribute streams on the basis of the examination they take in class 10, your class 10 marks decide your future.

Everyone thinks that history is a subject that only poor students study. Most of the schools don't teach interesting subjects like History and where it is taught students used to sleep in these classes.

Our dominant conception of education is increasingly technical and mechanistic.

Loopholes in Educators

Teaching has become a business in India, most of the competent teachers go to private coaching institutes for better perks and facilities and then they keep on switching their jobs from one institute to another for more lucrative perks and facilities. Doesn't It look like a business?

We also have a problem that nobody notices, are partiality by teachers, special attention to brilliant students, and less value given to weak ones.

Creating an overstrict environment in class is normal in schools especially in private schools.

Equivalent education should be given by the teachers to every student as every student is unique in his own way.

Introduction to Technology

This COVID-19 situation has made us realize the significance of technology in education. Schools are closed but still, students are studying for the last 4 months. Introducing technology to students of the lowest section of society is a challenge.

One of the main challenges for Digital education in India is the poor connectivity of the Internet to rural areas and some part of urban areas. A large population of rural areas is still illiterate in the field of Digital Technology. Also, many teachers are not trained to take online classes.

So the government should provide proper Internet connectivity to the lowest section of the society and schools need to train their educators in modern teaching patterns.

Purpose of Education

In the 12 years of school life, most students didn't get the purpose of their education. They don't have an idea for their future. Education should be about implanting useful skills and skills that provide jobs.

The Education Minister of a North Indian state said "We have a lot of jobs. We just don't have the people skilled enough to do them. We need biotechnologists, fitters, crane operators, nurses, and lab assistants. But our education does not prepare young people for what we need."

So, proper education can be a way to decrease unemployment in the country.

It is a very sad fact that None of the government has ever talked about Education in the last 60 - 70 years. Everyone takes the education system for granted.

"Education is the manifestation of perfection present already in man"
